Types of Eye Hooks

There are different types of eye hooks used for many reasons. A hook-and-eye fastener affixes sections of clothing together via a small hook and loop (or eye) by fitting the hook into the loop. Sometimes this closure is used alone in a small size and other times it is used in groups for greater strength. Other utilization includes large decorative hook-and-eye closures as embellishments on clothing.

Basics and hook-and-eye tape

A hook-and-eye is made of small pieces of bent wire. It is commonly used in multiples to provide greater strength. Because of that, it is sold in what is called hook-and-eye tape. This is two tapes, with one piece having the hooks attached and the other side having the loops. When the two sections are stitched onto an article of clothing, they hook together and close the garment.

Smaller hook-and-eye fasteners

The most common uses for hook-and-eye fasteners are on brassieres and other undergarments. These are small, inconspicuous closures that are not bulky or obtrusive. A lot of zippers on dresses, skirts and side-zip pants use these smaller hook-and-eye closures at the top to offer better security in keeping the zipper shut.

Bigger hook-and-eye closures

Bigger fasteners are used decoratively on items such as shirts, coats and jackets. If the article of clothing is too baggy, the hook comes out of the loop because no pressure is applied to keep it in place.

Some eye hooks are small and discreet, some are large and fanciful. These fasteners are simple in concept, but they work very well.
